Vendor

Time to execute
~5 minutes

On Slack desktop, click Admin (or your workspace name) > Manage billing > Change plan details > Downgrade to Free, choose when it takes effect, then click Downgrade Slack. Only Workspace Owners or the person who upgraded can do this. Slack doesn't charge for inactive members, so cleaning up accounts may be enough instead of canceling.

How to cancel on the web

You need to be a Workspace Owner or the person who upgraded the workspace.

  1. Open Slack on your computer and click Admin in the sidebar. If you don't see it, click your workspace name.
  2. Choose Manage billing.
  3. On the Overview tab, click Change plan details.
  4. Choose Downgrade to Free and pick whether it happens right away or on your next renewal date.
  5. Click Continue to Checkout, review the details and click Downgrade Slack.

Slack doesn't have a separate "cancel" button: downgrading to Free is how you stop paying.

Team and enterprise plans: the admin route

Moving from Business+ to Pro instead of Free:

  1. Go to Admin > Manage billing > Change plan details.
  2. Choose Downgrade to Pro, then pick a billing cycle and when the change should happen.
  3. Click Start Downgrade, review and click Continue.
  4. Confirm your payment method and click Confirm Billing and Downgrade.

You may get Slack credits for the unused part of Business+. Credits have no cash value and expire when your paid plan ends.

Enterprise Grid is a contract. Contact your Slack account team before the renewal date.

Downgrade or remove seats instead of canceling

With Slack, you often don't need to cancel to pay less:

  • Inactive members are free. Under Slack's Fair Billing Policy, members who haven't been active for a while aren't billed, and Slack credits your account for them. Check Manage billing to see how many active members you're actually paying for.
  • Deactivate people who left. In Admin > Manage members, deactivate former employees and contractors. Deactivated accounts don't count toward your bill.
  • Use guests for outsiders. Clients and freelancers can be multi-channel guests or use Slack Connect instead of taking a full paid seat.
  • Business+ when Pro would do. If you don't need SAML single sign-on, data exports for all messages or 99.99% uptime guarantees, Pro costs less.

Subscope helps here: it shows who on your team actually uses Slack and which tools overlap with it, so you can cut seats instead of canceling for everyone.

What happens to your data

Nothing is deleted the moment you downgrade, but the free plan has limits. You can see only the last 90 days of messages and files, and Slack deletes messages and files older than a year on free workspaces. Integrations are limited to a small number of apps, and huddles are one-on-one only.

If you need your history, export it before downgrading: Workspace Owners can export public channel data in Admin > Settings > Import/Export Data.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get a refund if I downgrade Slack?

Not in cash. If you downgrade early, the unused part of your plan may become Slack credits. They can't be transferred or refunded and expire when the paid plan ends.

Who can cancel a paid Slack plan?

Workspace Owners and the member who upgraded the workspace. Admins without owner rights can't change the plan.

What happens to our message history on the free plan?

You can see the last 90 days of messages and files. Messages and files older than one year are deleted on free workspaces, so export anything you need first.

Do we pay for Slack members who never log in?

Usually not. Slack's Fair Billing Policy doesn't charge for inactive members and credits your account. Deactivate people who left so they don't count again if they log in by accident.

Can I downgrade Slack from Business+ to Pro instead?

Yes. Go to Admin > Manage billing > Change plan details and choose Downgrade to Pro. You may get credits for the unused time.

Why is this guide on Subscope?

Subscope helps companies keep their software subscriptions under control. Connect Gmail or Outlook, and Subscope finds your software receipts and renewal emails and shows everything you pay for in one dashboard. It reminds you before renewals and shows which tools your team actually uses, so you never overspend on software, AI and cloud services.
