How to cancel on the web

This is for individual plans: Plus, Professional and Essentials.

  1. Sign in at dropbox.com.
  2. Click your avatar (picture or initials) in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Click Manage account.
  4. Scroll down and click Cancel plan. If you don't see it, you probably bought Dropbox on your phone; see the app store steps below.
  5. Pick a reason and click Continue canceling, then follow the prompts.

You'll get an email from Dropbox with the subject "Dropbox Plan will not renew". Your plan stays active until the end of the billing period, then the account becomes free Dropbox Basic.

Deleting the Dropbox app or letting your card expire does not cancel the plan. Your bank may still pass charges to a new card.

If you pay through the App Store or Google Play

If you bought Dropbox or started a trial in the mobile app, Apple or Google bills you and the Cancel plan button won't appear on dropbox.com.

  • iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions > Dropbox > Cancel Subscription.
  • Android: open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions > Subscriptions > Dropbox and tap Cancel subscription.

Refunds for app store purchases are handled by Apple or Google.

Team and enterprise plans: the admin route

Dropbox Standard, Business, Advanced and Business Plus are canceled by a team admin with billing access. Team members can't cancel on their own.

  1. Sign in at dropbox.com with your admin account.
  2. Click Admin console in the left sidebar, then Billing.
  3. Scroll down and click Cancel plan.
  4. Pick a reason and click Continue with cancellation.
  5. Check all the boxes under Please acknowledge the following and click Complete cancellation.

The team keeps working until the end of the billing period. To double-check, open Admin console > Billing: you should see a notice that the subscription is scheduled to cancel.

Paying by invoice, or on Dropbox Enterprise? You can't cancel online. Contact your account manager or Dropbox Support, and for Enterprise do it at least 30 days before your renewal date.

Downgrade or remove seats instead of canceling

Before you cancel the whole team, check whether a smaller plan would do:

  • Switch to a cheaper team plan. In Admin console > Billing, click Change plan next to your current plan, pick a smaller one and confirm. For example, Business Plus to Business, or Business to Standard. The change applies at your next renewal.
  • Remove licenses for people who left. Former employees often keep a paid license. Transfer their files to a teammate, then remove them from the team.
  • Move occasional users to individual accounts. You can convert one team member's account to a personal account instead of paying for a team seat.
  • Check storage, not just seats. If you only need more space for one person, Plus or Professional may cost less than a team seat.

Subscope helps here: it shows which Dropbox licenses nobody has used in 30 days, so you can trim the team before renewal instead of canceling for everyone.

What happens to your data

Canceling doesn't delete your account. At the end of the billing period, it becomes a free Dropbox Basic account with 2 GB of storage.

If you have more than 2 GB, you won't be able to sync, upload or share new files until you free up space. If the account stays over the limit, Dropbox may eventually delete files to bring it under the limit, so download what you need before the plan ends.

For team plans, the team goes into a locked state after cancellation: most team viewing, syncing and sharing features stop working. Members should move or download important files before the end date.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get a refund if I cancel Dropbox?

Usually not. Canceling stops the next renewal, and you keep the paid plan until the period ends. If you think you were billed by mistake, contact Dropbox Support. App store refunds come from Apple or Google.

Why don't I see the Cancel plan button?

You probably subscribed in the Dropbox mobile app, so Apple or Google bills you. Cancel in your phone's subscription settings. On a team plan, only an admin with billing access can cancel.

What happens to my files over 2 GB?

They stay in your account, but you can't sync or upload until you're under the limit. If you stay over the limit for a long time, Dropbox may delete files, so download what you need first.

I canceled, so why am I still being charged?

Check for a second Dropbox account or an app store subscription. Dropbox's transaction ID lookup tool can tell you which email a charge belongs to.

Can I downgrade our Dropbox team instead of canceling?

Yes. An admin can go to Admin console > Billing, click Change plan and pick a smaller plan. The new plan starts at your next renewal.

Why is this guide on Subscope?

Subscope helps companies keep their software subscriptions under control. Connect Gmail or Outlook, and Subscope finds your software receipts and renewal emails and shows everything you pay for in one dashboard. It reminds you before renewals and shows which tools your team actually uses, so you never overspend on software, AI and cloud services.
