How to cancel on the web

This is for ChatGPT Plus and Pro bought on chatgpt.com.

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com.
  2. Open your account menu (your name or picture) and choose Settings.
  3. Click Billing.
  4. Under Cancel plan, click Cancel and confirm.
  5. You keep paid features until the end of the current billing period. After that, your account moves to the free plan.

Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date, or the next charge may already go through. If the billing options don't show up, try signing in from a different browser.

Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel anything, and you don't need to delete your account just to stop paying.

If you pay through the App Store or Google Play

If you upgraded inside the ChatGPT app, Apple or Google bills you, so you have to cancel there. A subscription bought on chatgpt.com won't show up in your phone's subscriptions, and the other way around.

  • iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions > ChatGPT > Cancel Subscription, and confirm.
  • Android: open the Google Play Store app, go to Subscriptions, tap ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. Make sure you're signed in to the Google account you paid with.

Deleting your ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple subscription. Cancel in Apple settings first. Refunds for App Store purchases come from Apple, not OpenAI.

Team and enterprise plans: the admin route

ChatGPT Business (formerly ChatGPT Team) can only be canceled by the workspace owner.

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT and switch to your Business workspace.
  2. Open your account menu and choose Workspace settings.
  3. Click Billing, then Manage plan.
  4. Click Cancel subscription and confirm.

The workspace stays active until the end of the billing period, then it's deactivated. Data isn't deleted, but nobody can use it until the owner reactivates the workspace. If your company runs ads through a ChatGPT Business workspace, pause campaigns first and make sure someone still has access to Ads Manager.

ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu are contracts and can't be canceled in settings. Contact your OpenAI account team before the renewal date.

Downgrade or remove seats instead of canceling

For teams, the cost problem is usually seats, not the plan. In ChatGPT Business, you pay for every seat at the start of each billing cycle, whether or not anyone uses it. Before canceling, check these:

  • Unused seats. Removing a member frees their seat, but you keep paying for it. To actually pay less, go to Workspace settings > Members > Users > Manage seats and schedule a seat reduction. It takes effect at the next billing cycle.
  • Premium seats nobody needs. Premium seats cost several times more than Standard. Move people who only chat now and then down to a Standard seat.
  • Personal Plus subscriptions on expense reports. Employees often pay for ChatGPT Plus themselves and expense it. If you already have a Business workspace, that's double spending.
  • Annual plans. Seats on an annual plan stay committed until the end of the term, so plan reductions before renewal.

Subscope helps here: it shows who on your team actually uses ChatGPT and which AI tools you're paying for twice, so you can cut seats instead of canceling for everyone.

What happens to your data

Canceling Plus or Pro doesn't delete anything. Your chats, custom GPTs and files stay in your account. You just lose paid features like higher limits and the most advanced models when the period ends.

For ChatGPT Business, the workspace is deactivated after the subscription ends. The data isn't deleted, but members can't open it. The owner can reactivate the workspace later from the account menu. If you create a new workspace instead, it starts empty.

Only deleting your ChatGPT account removes your data. Export your chats first under Settings > Data controls > Export data.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Usually not. Canceling just stops the next renewal. OpenAI may refund an unused charge if you ask within 7 days. In the EU and UK, you can get a prorated refund within 14 days of purchase. App Store refunds come from Apple.

I canceled but I'm still being charged. Why?

You probably have a second subscription, for example one in the App Store or under another email. Check your receipts to see who billed you. Also, if you canceled less than 24 hours before the billing date, that charge may have already gone through.

Does deleting the app or my account cancel the subscription?

Deleting the app never cancels it. Deleting your account cancels a subscription billed by ChatGPT, but not one billed by Apple. Cancel through the store first.

How do I remove unused seats from ChatGPT Business?

Go to Workspace settings > Members > Users > Manage seats and schedule a reduction. Removing a member alone doesn't lower the bill. The reduction applies at the next billing cycle.

What happens to our ChatGPT Business data after canceling?

The workspace is deactivated at the end of the billing period. Data isn't deleted, and the owner can reactivate the workspace later to get it back.

Why is this guide on Subscope?

Subscope helps companies keep their software subscriptions under control. Connect Gmail or Outlook, and Subscope finds your software receipts and renewal emails and shows everything you pay for in one dashboard. It reminds you before renewals and shows which tools your team actually uses, so you never overspend on software, AI and cloud services.
